Our Work

Volvo Construction Equipment - Unique case study articles

Part of one of the world's best known brands, Volvo's construction equipment division is a major international company developing, manufacturing and marketing equipment for construction and related industries. Its products, leaders in many world markets, include wheel loaders, hydraulic excavators, articulated haulers and compact equipment.

With over 14,000 employees, the company has facilities and customers in more than 100 countries. Part of Volvo's communication challenge is to find cost effective, entertaining and consistent ways to promote its internal and external activities around the world.

The Solution

The resolution to the problem is a 'win-win' for Volvo and the international press. With reduced editorial staff and diminished freelance budgets, magazines struggle to get equipment application stories from smaller or more unusual locations. But what if SE10 travelled to regions where Volvo customers were working on interesting projects - and reported on them in a journalistic, freelance way? SE10 could then deliver these stories, plus photographs to the international press at zero cost to the magazines. At the same time, SE10's writer could also cover the event for Volvo's internal communication purposes, interviewing the local employees for posting to the company's intranet or employee magazine.

What We Did

This approach has been used successfully in many locations, with SE10 writers reporting for Volvo from as far afield as Angola, Lebanon, Australia, Siberia, Canada and Qatar. One successful trip involved visiting Volvo customers at a hydro-project deep in the rain forest of Panama, and then down to the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to cover more projects, including the latter city's ambitious ring road development. Keeping travel costs to a minimum SE10 reported from four projects in five days. Accompanied by great photography, our stories were enthusiastically picked up by the relevant international business press - and our interviews with regional Volvo executives and dealer principals also gained extensive internal coverage in the company's employee magazine Volvo CE News and the its intranet, Violin.
